Winnie’s Two-Month Ampuversary!

Well, we’ve made it two whole months. (and Happy St. Patty’s Day, folks.) Overall, Winnie is doing ok. But I have a question – for those of you lucky enough to get your dog back to 100%, how long did it take?

I’m getting things all mixed up in my head. She didn’t respond well to the metronomic chemo so we’re taking a month off. We’re, instead, focusing on Winnie’s mobility and comfort first and then we’ll see. She’s doing physical therapy and it’s really helping. But it’s work! About 30 minutes every morning and night – massage, passive motion exercise, “shake” shoulder stretches and stand up/sit downs.

I took her off the Remadyl for a few days because she was panting a lot. At first, she seemed really awesome. But I’ve put her back on worries about soreness/pain. Honestly, she spends about 90 minutes panting every night and maybe that’s normal? I just can’t tell.

This is all to say that she’s “ok”, that it’s a lot of ups and downs, that I’m recently not doing a very good job of living in the moment and long for some normalcy. But, I think she’s happy for the most part and I love her so much!! Maybe I’m just worrying too much?

  1. Happy Ampuversary Winnie! You’re looking good!I’m sorry to hear she didn’t do well with the metronomics. We talked with our onco about that because we decided against IV chemo and she said that would be something we could look at down the road, but not now so I don’t have much to add. Just wanted you to know we are thinking about you guys! Praying this rough patch passes soon

  2. Look at that face!! Goodness gracious that girl melts my heart everytime!! All you have to dois look at her and now all is well!! That is one content looking pup!!!

I think yoj’ve asked some great questions! How ’bout postng over in the forum so you can get more exposure to responses.

I can address sme questions though. I know that evry dog’s recovery is DIFFERENT! It’s almost impossible not to compare.
Winnie had a rough recoverh AND started metro. on top of that. All contributing factors to a slower recovery.

S she eatng okay? Waggng her tail? Engaged? Enjoying life, jist at a slower pace?

Is her PT strenous at all or more stretching and massage?

I kow that Pug Maggie was at least six weeks before Karen started to see her sparkle come back. For six weeks she just pretty much laid around and was not herself.

Does the panting happen after her PT? After any type of exertion at all?

Perhaps a small dose of Tramadol at night…maybe an hour or so before she “usually” starts panting.

I do know that for the first couple of months or so, often t es dogs are put back on pain meds periodically.

Check with your vet, but maybe yo could put Winnie on Meloxicam (Metacam) nstead of Rimadyl. Again, another reason to plst on the foru s as there is a lot of feedback on these two drugs.
