Five inches of snow on the ground and it’s clear Winnie doesn’t like snow as much as she used to. No interest in it and she looks a little uneasy about it. Honestly, I’m a little worried. Winnie remains sleepy but also a little restless. She moves around from spot to spot and doesn’t have much interest in going outside. I don’t think she’s pooped in a couple of days either. She doesn’t seem to be panting much and doesn’t look to be in much pain. She just looks down. She’s more cuddly than usual. What’s changed in the past two days? First, I’m back at work at least for about 6 hours a day. Second, we took her off the novox (the NSAID) but she’s still on the antibiotic, gabapentin and tramadol. I have a feeling this is just part of the healing process but I’d feel a lot better if she pooped!! I dunno. Things are bad. They’re just not great either. Ugh.
Not feeling like a party yet, that’s for sure.
Okay, let’s kind of do a check list.
She did poop n daythree, right?
She’s eating and drinking, right?
She may have over done it a little also on her first few days home.
If yo have ANY concerns, by all means check with yor vet. You want to make sure no nfection is nvolved.
You ma wamt to give her some canned pumpkin…the real stuff…if she’ll eat it. Others ave used it to help move the bowels alng. Maybe mix some veggies in with her chicken.
The meds can play havoc with the bowels.
I kow Happy Hannah was very, very restless for almost two weeks.
It’s such a “catch 22″. Pain meds can make a dog restless…or sleepy. Pain can make a dog restless. You may ask yor vet about adding the novox back in to the mix, or maybe bumping the pain meds up a touch…OR…taking them down a notch! I know, crazy!!
I do think this early in recovery, the restlessness is probably pain related, but double check with your vet.
Winnie is very smart about not wanting to go ot in the snow. She kows she needs to be more careful and not slip or fall. Happy Hannah (who goes up and down a ramp–she’ll go down stairs, but not up), waits fr me to walk by her side if it’s icey or snow.
One thing yo might do to perk her up ks have so eone co e over she likes. Have them knock on the door and show all sorts of excitement when this person comes in.
This is the rough part of watching our pups recover from this major surgery. Humans would still be in the hospital and on morphine! If yo’re like me, you’re thinking when willit get better? Will it ever get better?
YES, Winnie will get her sparkle back! Try a gentle massage with her tonhelp relax her muscles and that may help alleviate the discomfort.
I’ll loo, for your next update and keeping oaws crossed for her recovery to start speeding up!
Oh! I just remembered! I joined this community six days after her amputation. My first post was something like, ” It’s six days past a rear leg amputation and I’m afraid I made a horrible decision”! Yep…that was six days post amp!
Happy Hannah is celebratingnher eleven month ampuversary and moving forward (knocking on wood)! I can now tell you…best decision evsr!!
Hang in tnere. Replenish your chocolate supply and eat massive amounts every hour!:-) 🙂
Sending hugs to you and Winnie…healing hugs!
Sally and Happy Hannah
You are amazing. Thank you so much for reading and helping. I can’t tell you how much it means to us.
I slept downstairs with her last night so that she didn’t need the donut around her head and could get a good night’s sleep. She did pretty well. Up every couple of hours but I think that’s normal. And she pooped this morning! It was kind of a mess but she did it it!
I emailed with the vet late last night and have added the Novox back into the mix this morning to see if that helps at all.
Today, we hear confirmation of the cancer stage and whether or not we’ll do chemo. Here’s hoping. And thanks again so so much!
Oh YAAAAAY! we’ve got poop (messy counts!) AND a couple hours sleep uninterrupted?? CONGRATULATIONS!!
Happy Hannah was one of the few that didn’t jave to wear a cone. She actually licked her vront legs more than ever licking at the site! Weird!
I LOVE reading aout sweet Winnie! The privilege is mi e! These darn blogs go up and down so fast someti es and, for whatever reason, many people just miss them. Their loss!
Whatever the “diagnosis”, you’ll come up with a plan that will work for Winnie! That sweet girl hase a lot of living to do and a whole lot of loving and spoiling to get!!
Okay, I do have a favor….. next post……PICTURE INCLUDED! Have to have my Winnie Fix!!
Hang in there. She really does seems to be having a very normal recovery. You’ll still jave plenty of ups and downs the next several days, but soon nothing but UPS!!
